Privacy Breach $15 000 Fine for Pharmacist

In April 2010 the Information and Privacy Commissioner received a complaint from an individual. On December 6, 2011, the OIPC published a news release. A pharmacist was fined $15 000 for unauthorized use and disclosure of health information. In response to an interpersonal conflict, the pharmacist inappropriately accessed multiple individual's health information using Alberta Netcare and posted information about the individuals on a social networking website. The employer, a pharmacy, had recently provided continuing education entitled "Alberta Netcare Portal'.
